Scoring
A point is made in Ultimate by making a catch in the opposing end zone. Two feet must land in bounds for the point to count. If a player jumps to make a catch and lands with one foot in and one foot out he/she is “straddling” the line and the point will not count. If this happens between the end zone and out-of-bounds then the disc is considered out and it results in a turnover. If a straddle happens between the end zone and playing field, the the player still has possession. He/she steps out of the end zone and play resumes. After every point the team that was scored on has to walk to the other end zone and wait for the next Pull, so teams switch sides every point.
Finishing the Game
A game of Ultimate is completed when the Game Total or Point Cap is reached, or when the time runs out - whichever comes first. Time limits and Point Caps depend on league / tournament rules or captains' agreement.
In Ultimate you must reach the Game Total (often 15 points) and be at least two points ahead of your opponent to win. So, if you reach 15 points and the other team has 13 points or fewer, you win. If you score 15 points and the other team has 14 points, the new Game Total required to win will become 16. If the other team scores to tie the game at 15, the new Game Total will become 17, and so on. The Point Cap comes into play when teams are evenly matched and neither team is able to get two points ahead of the other. Regardless of lead, when a team reaches the predetermined Point Cap (often 2 above Game Total) it wins.
Time limits are used to limit game time when neither team is able to reach the Game Total. Time limits are imposed via a Soft Cap and a Hard Cap. When playing time reaches the Soft Cap, and after the in-progress scoring attempt is completed, the requirement for winning changes from reaching the Game Total to simply being ahead by two points. For example, after the Soft Cap, a score of 14-12, or even 4-2, will win the game. If neither team pulls ahead by two and the time reaches the Hard Cap, and after the in-progress scoring attempt is completed, the team with the most points wins (the win-by-two rule goes away). If teams are tied when the Hard Cap is reached, the next team to score a point wins the game.
